The first MIDI drum machine, the first MIDI sequencer, and the Roland TR-909, the Roland MSQ-700, were introduced in 1983. The Roland Jupiter-6 and Prophet 600 were the first MIDI instruments to be introduced in 1982. Kakehashi and Smith, who earned Technical Grammy Awards in 2013 for their contributions, introduced the MIDI standard. In August 1983, the MIDI standard was published. Smith showed a MIDI link between Prophet 600 and Roland JP-6 synths at the 1983 Winter NAMM Show. MIDI allows any MIDI-compatible keyboard (or other controller devices) to be linked to any other MIDI-compatible sequencer, drum machine, synthesizer, sound module, or computer, regardless of manufacturer. This meant that a musician couldn't plug a Roland keyboard into a Yamaha synthesizer module, for example. Before the development of MIDI, electrical musical instruments from various manufacturers could not interact with one another.
